We have been working to reduce food loss and waste in Japan since 2016,
because Japan has large amounts of food loss and waste in compare with other countries.
And also we are proud of our activity,
because we most contributes to the reduction of food loss and waste in Japan.

Why Food Loss & Waste
is not Good for us?

In short, this is because throwing our food is same as throwing our money.
We regard our food (what we can eat) as what has a worth. Moreover, when we throw our food, it takes a lot of our tax!!
In summery, “we waste our money to throw our food”. We can say, it is so MOTTAINAI!

And do you know that poverty problem
is seriously in Japan?

In addition, while some people throw our food, the other cannot eat enough.
We have to correct this contradiction.

Our Contribution for the Reduction of Food Loss & Waste

“What should we do to reduce FLW ?”

Firstly, our manager started to divide two actors; companies and customers.

For companies?

We buy (or sometimes are donated) foods from them that would be thrown away still we can eat safely. After that, we sell these foods to customers in our shop. This leads to reducing FLW. For consumers, we take another approach, which is explained below. The reason why we take the different approaches for two actors is, this is because we do not sure that whether customers conserve food in proper. On the other hand, we can sure that food companies can do that because they have knowledge that how to conserve food and the means to do it.

*We call this activity “direct activity for the reduction of FLW”.

For customers?

What we do are advocacy and development. We work to explain the difference between “Best Before” and “Expiry Dates” and the best way to food preservation and make customers understand the correct information about food.
In order to do so, we explain at our Website, for some media, for schools or students, and at our shop ecoeat.

*We call this activity “indirect activity for reduction of food loss and waste”

Aim to Sustainable Project

It takes some money to do something good for society, so it is not easy to do sustainably.
Although the more we continue to do it, the more we can see the effects of our activities.

In general, NPO can work supported by main donations. Sometimes NPO members pay own money because donations are not enough. It is possible to make costs down, but also it is difficult to continue that work.
This is a difficult and permanent problem.
When we started to work, we were also supported by company that our manager runs on his own and volunteers from member’s family. But now, we can manage the funds of our activity from the sales of ecoeat and work more widely.

We buy (or sometimes are donated) from food companies some drinks, foods, and snacks,
And then we check them, finally, we choose and sell what you can eat safely, tasty and enjoy.

Anyone can visit and buy food at ecoeat if you want.

When you buy something at ecoeat,
It is possible that the more we can reduce FLW and also the more we can help people in needed.

Purpose of ecoeat

    Advocacy and Development

    We mainly sell food that would be thrown away, but still, we can eat safety and tasty. When you visit our shop, you will be surprised at the amount of food that was supposed to be thrown away. Staffs always learn and check the safety of food.
    They can understand the difference between “Best Before” and “Expiry Dates”. And explain not only that of safety, but also tasty.

    Community Contribution

    We are going to open our shops all over Japan, in order to make it easy for those who do not have a smartphone or internet or need help to come and buy.
    Our shop, ecoeat is not a discount store.
    We are not competing with any other shops or businesses.

    There is a reason why we sell goods in cheap. This is because we hope that you eat enough every day by cutting the costs of food.

    Management

    While some companies are suffering from the amount of food waste, some people cannot eat in enough every day and need help. We have to change this contradiction.
    But it costs when we work to change it.
    We can manage costs when we work to reduce FLW and send food to those in need, by the sales of ecoeat.

TARGET 1.2

By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions
We work for food support for the extreme poverty those who do not full of the basic of living and the relative poverty those who do not eat enough.

TARGET 2.2

By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
We work for food support for the single-parent family that tends to be severe in time and economically. Through this support, we aim to support their smiley and healthy childcare.

TARGET 3.2

By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births
We also work for food support for those who have risks of domestic violence. This is because we believe that food supporting would be able to improve the death of violence caused by poverty, even if the number of this cases is much less in Japan.

TARGET 4.4

By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship
We hope that better environment activities and extensible activities would be more increasing. We support to do personal development for the future by connecting with schools and students in our community and telling correct knowledge of Food Loss and Waste.

TARGET 12.3

By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses
We aim to decrease Food Loss and Waste in the food supply chain by using our shop “ecoeat” revenue, which is our core activity.

TARGET 16.1

Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere
In order to decrease violence caused by poverty, it is necessary for everyone to have a mind kind and help each other. That would make people smile and peace. We believe and support that it would be decreased violence through we hear and give help in fair.
